The Vampire Diaries Episode 8 - Ordinary People

SPOILER ALERT!

Don't read the following if you don't want to be spoiled.

In the previous episode of TVD, the ghost of Mason Lockwood brought Damon to a cave which was said to help kill Klaus. But before they could reach the end of the cave, Damon encountered a barrier that prevents him (and other vampires) from entering. Mason was the only one who was able to continue to the end of the cave. He discovered something there but before he could tell Damon what it was, the door between the ghost world and the real world was closed by Bonnie, making Mason go back to the other side. Damon, knowing that something was there at the end of the cave, asked for the help of Alaric. (TVD ep 7, Ghost World).

Damon, Alaric and Elena went to the cave. There, they discovered some viking writings on the walls, which indicated that it was already there even before that part of the world was discovered. Names of the members of the original family of vampires was among the writings, along with some symbols that tells the story of the originals. Those writings were carved there by Rebecca and Klaus thousands of years ago.

Out of those writings, Damon, Alaric and Elena discovered that Michael, the vampire hunter, was actually the father of Klaus, Rebecca, and Elijah.

Elena wanted to know the story behind the originals and why Rebecca and Klaus are afraid of their own father, Michael. she wanted to talk to Rebecca but the latter doesn't want to. However, when Elena showed her the picture of the writings on the wall, telling Rebecca that they've already discovered her relationship with Michael, Rebecca had a second thought.

Rebecca agreed to talk to Elena. She told Elena the story of her family. She told her that thousands of years ago, when they were still humans, werewolves lived in the neighboring land. Rebecca's family knew about the werewolves and they were at peace with them for over 20 years. Once a month, when the werewolves turn, the humans will retreat to the caves to be safe and maintain the peace between them. But the peace was broken when Klaus and his younger brother Heinrich, snuck out of the cave one full moon. Heinrich was killed by the werewolves, which destroyed the peace between them.

Klaus' parents, in order to protect their children, asked for the help of the witch, Ayanah, to cast a spell/curse on their family to make them stronger and faster than the werewolves. But Ayanah would not want to take a part of it because she said that it would destroy the balance of the nature and there will be terrible consequences. Because Ayanah don't want to do it, Klaus' mother, who was also a witch did the curse and made her family stronger and faster than the werewolves: this was the origin of the vampires.

Later on, the family learned the consequences that Ayanah was talking about: the sun, the ravain, the oak tree, and the worst of all, the cravings for blood.

Michael then found out that Klaus' mother had an affair with a werewolf before, and Klaus' wasn't his son. Out of pride and anger, Michael killed their mother and then went into rampage killing half of the villagers. Because Klaus wasn't his son, Michael wanted to kill klaus. That was when he started hunting Klaus.

At the present time, Alaric studied the symbols of the wall and discovered the story of the original family. But there was this story behind a group of symbol that he could not decipher. Elena saw those symbols and realization came upon her. She then went to Rebecca to tell her about it. She told Rebecca that Michael did not kill their mother, Klaus did (maybe because his mother turned her back on him). She told Rebecca that Klaus lied to her for thousands of years so she will not leave him. Rebecca did not like to believe what Elena was saying but as implied by her reactions, Rebecca now had doubts about her brother.

Meanwhile, Damon freed Stefan from "Lexie's strategy" and tried a shot himself instead to make Stefan feel again. He brought him to a bar and let him feel the freedom (that was taken from him when Klaus compelled him), pointing out the good feeling if Stefan is freed from Klaus' compulsion. They were arguing about this and Stefan argued that he will never be free unless Klaus will be killed. At this moment, Michael stepped in saying that he could help kill Klaus. He asked Stefan to tell him where Klaus is. Stefan, being compelled by Klaus, told Michael that he could not tell him. Michael then used Damon to get an answer from Stefan. He threatened to rip out Damon's heart if Stefan will not tell. In order to save Damon, Stefan promised Michael that he will find a way to lure Klaus back to Mystic Falls. This scene hinted that there is still actually a chance to make Stefan feel again, when he showed some care for Damon's life when it was threatened.

The last scene of this episode was in Elena's room, with Elena and Damon in the bed talking. Elena, after realizing the extent of what love between family can do from Rebecca's story, told Damon that he will be the only one who can save Stefan. She said to Damon that, "Stefan will be saved not because he loves me, but because he loves you."
